The latest drink we made is a dessert drink known as the Golden Dream. It’s a creamy cocktail that brings together citrus and the flavoring of a complex herbal liqueur.
The citrus flavors are provided by triple sec and freshly squeezed orange juice, with the herbal notes provided by the Italian liqueur known as Galliano.
The full recipe:
- 2/3 oz. Galliano Liqueur
- 2/3 oz. Triple Sec
- 2/3 oz. Fresh-Squeezed Orange Juice
- 1/3 oz. Heavy Cream
Pour all the ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously just for a few seconds. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. For our triple sec, we again used Cointreau.
Both of us reached the same exact conclusion upon our first sip of this cocktail: “It tastes like a Creamsicle!” That is, this drink reminded us both of the creamy orange flavored popsicles from our childhood.
This was the first encounter for both of us with Galliano, and we were both nervous. That’s because the scent of this drink reminded us both strangely of another herbal liqueur with anise: the very non-dessert-like Jägermeister. Our fears were unfounded, however. The Galliano was not overpowering and added a pleasant vanilla note to this cocktail.
This drink was billed as a dessert cocktail, and it lived up to the billing. An alternate recipe calls for vanilla ice cream to be used instead of the heavy cream. As an after-dinner dessert, we couldn’t imagine a more suitably sweet combination.
